Will Cyrene really go live in the face of these other MMO's?

Wistrel

Kick Ass Elf

Interestingly the 2nd to last should look familiar (its CryEngine3)

I ask this cause Cyrene in the past have often talked of picking the "release window" and saying that launches of other games and what not will make a difference.

This stuff all looks pretty awesome (I didn't realise other MMO's were so advanced now!) there are also other things like the Secret World coming out this year I think...

I guess I was just out of touch... I thought Entropia was maybe ahead of the game graphically but now I'm not so sure. At best it is equalling it.

Thoughts?

Very interesting previews maybe even worth having a closer look but for me my loyalties remain with EU and imho yes Cryene will go live and rank highly among the "other MMO's" but thats just my opinion :)

Well one factor is can you actually make and take out money from any of those games? I bet not.
I know many have paid a lot to play Entropia but i've paid way less then if i'd played a subscrtiption game.

So i think a lot will be how much will it cost to play Cyrene and what will MA do to make the planet economies work better.

I really hope Cyrene gets more of a chance to beta test there world Live before having a big launch. First Impressions are important.

Loot is way to unstable. I can tell 10 new players to do the exact same thing. 1 out of the 10 will do well and not loose all his money 2 or 3 out of the 10 will do ok enough to keep wanting to play, but 5 or 6 of them will just loose like crazy and be out of ped in a hurry and quit forever.

i can't really complain about the loot system personally but i can't seem to get it to work the same for others.

A big part is what i say over and over again. And adding planets is making it worse.....

TOOO MANNYY ITEMS!!!

The Biggest discouragement i get from new players is they have like 20 different items off ONE creature from ONE hunt and it's these little piles of materials that they can't sell to anyone even when they have a "market value" if no one is buying it's still only worth TT just cause someone buys it for 150% once. and it's much the same with mining. They hate waiting around to sell stuff for days before they can do the fun activities like hunting or mining it gets borning fast and these are people that have deposited.

The biggest screw up is that from what i see the loot system works on returns based on those averages of what things sell for on auction. But those averages are screwed up because some stuff doesn't sell everyday and are pretty much screwed up by the community's greed and desperation. (i.e. lots of an item for auction all with high min bids and one desperate to need some and overpaying, now the whole values is screwed up)

it sounds like though like MA has some plans from the latest buzz lets hope some good major changes come.

EU will never be able to compete againts the more "normal" online games when compairing action and graphics, at least not yet. MA and the planet partners are too small to be able to put that much development in to it. EU are also different from other game because the focus is on the RCE element. Maybe in the future when/if we get a bigger playerbase, MA and the planetpartners will be able to have bigger development teams and be able to improve and add more stuff to the game.

Planet Cyrene has a very large development team behind it. I'm sure you will be positively surprised as the Planet will fully develop =)

it's not Cyrene's part i'm worried about it's MA's To be honest the thing i'm scared most about is Cyrene killing all the other planets.

Yes, i don't think the problem is Cyrene, i know they probably have the manpower to delivier, but they can only to as much as the EU software allowed them to do. It depends much on how good MA are on developing the EU game engine and tools that the planet partners can use. They are improving it all the time with new possiblities, so hopefuly the planet parnters will have all the tools they need. Stuff like the possiblity to add cool cutscenes to missions and events are one "must have".

RAZER

again, I have no idea...
Below the reason why I will not be playing any of those games

Firefall
Looks like a capture the fortress type of game. Tried a few of those and didn't like any of them

The secret world
Was excited about it, but looks more and more like your standard hack slash and shoot game

Planetside 2
Looks the same as Firefall to me

Archeage
What is this game about, I only see nice pictures that are not even from in game I think

Guildwars 2
Elves !!

As we wait..more questions..:)

Now, yes you may have a large team, but for all your work, you then have to submit it to MA smaller team for this to more or less copy what it is you want done? Still learning here..:) Or can you submit cry2 graphics and data models for MA to add?

RAZER

again, I have no idea...
From what I have heard form the Arkadia team, they send the stuff over to MindArk who just have to check the items and other stuff for bugs (yeah funny that they do that for the PP and forget to do that sometimes for their own stuff), impact on the economy and that sort of stuff. If everything checks out they can add it in the package for the next VU. I assume that the PP deliver a working set to MA, so 3D models, textures and all the other stuff needed and other then to check there is no work for MA, but I could be wrong of course.

The major problem is probably the bottleneck called MA.

~2 ago MA claimed to have invested a total of 60+ Million USD in the platform iirc. Add the investments of the PPs and you might end up at 100 Million USD in 2012.

Does it look and feel like a 100 Million USD game in 2012? No? 70 Million? Maybe 40 Million? That would be be a 60 Million USD fail. Players deposited Millions, MA's fail.

MA licensed CE2 in 2007. Now we have 2012. Five years of development... That's about what it took Crytek to create the whole CryEngine + Crysis. Probably for way less than 30 Million USD in total.

Well, that's the figures.

Planet Cyrene has a very large development team behind it. I'm sure you will be positively surprised as the Planet will fully develop =)

Mh, how big will Cyrene be at launch? How many server areas, 4? 6? 10+? How many creatures, missions, etc?

RAZER!! How have you been man! If this being the same RAZER as in game, this guy was the first to show me around game and get me going a good 9 months ago!

This is what I am hoping for. There has been a lot of mixed signals on how this is done. This is what I'm hopping for since it's been known that MA's team isn't all that good with cry2 yet and by letting others submit their own models, MA can learn from it but more, make a planet stand out due to the fact other teams my be better and cry2 development.

Man I hope this is how it works!

Hi,

I didn't realise other MMO's were so advanced now!
Hehe, EU is far from being noticeable in the MMO scene for being advanced in any way, it doesn't even nearly reach the visual quality and playability of the the "CE2 Demo", Crysis (demo download 1.8 GB from Nvidia).

An expensive game engine alone doesn't make a good game by itself, there needs to be a team of qualified developers using it, and this seems to be MA's problem.
Just check the way we're handling our guns, and worse, our swords ...
And compare it to the Crysis demo I linked above. Don't forget to play a bit with the gfx options, you'll realize that you'll be able to run Crysis with significantly more eye candy compared to EU.

But EU doesn't make it's points with eye candy or realism, EU's points are the RCE and the thus more mature community, IMHO. And regarding this I wouldn't think that any of the mentioned 5 MMO's would endanger Cyrene at all.

For sure, the GW2 release will, for a while, reduce the number of participants in all EU. ArenaNet has shown that they know how to make good games. But they also have shown that they are very good in destroying their work due to too much emphasis to PvP, and since the overwhelming amount of players of MMO's since ever were PvE, this isn't the wisest of choices.

The PvP people are always quickly attracted by MMO's, but usually return to their native FPS as fast as they came - MMO and FPS are diametrically game concepts:
  • MMO's are all about slow skilling, complicated game mechanics and, most important, the developing of a player avatar. Thus MMO players usually just HATE frequent changes in the game mechanics, since such can destroy the "work" of a quite long time.
  • Multiplayer FPS on the other hand are all about quick action, without any grind, on an even & carefully & continuously balanced play ground, preferably using premade toons.
You see, this doesn't fit together. Whatever decision the game company will make, it will send either the PvP or the PvE people into uproar.
This doesn't mean that PvP doesn't work in an MMO at all - it just means that it's a futile effort to cater your MMO after the PvP players, and this is the reason why I think most of these 5 MMO's will fail anyway, sooner or later. They'll fail like the countless tries to do so before. (GW2 might be an exception, maybe ANet has learned a bit from their first try ...)

Many PvE players would happily engage in casual PvP, as long as they'd not loose anything from their hard achieved skills and possessions, and as long as there'd be small incentives - PvP players are playing for the victory mainly, PvE players are playing for fun & improvement of their avatars.

Guess no single PvE player at all would mind the existence of PvP in the game, as long as it can be fully avoided without missing important game features, and as long as it wouldn't create the need of continuous "balance updates" destroying the carefully crafted plan of improvement for their avatars. While the PvP players are crying for those every other day, as long as they're not playing with prefab toons there'd never be a perfect balance.

Ouch, this has become long, and quite off topic too ...

In short, I'd think Cyrene can launch whenever they're done. I'd not necessarily launch close to the GW2 release, this might distract some possible participants for a while.
EU is so much in it's special niche, it cannot be compared with the everyday friendly MMO in the neighborhood at all.

The most dangerous risk, I'd think, would be too much success of the Cyrene launch. Would Cyrene draw too many of the big spenders from other planets these might feel endangered and start countermeasures, to get them players back. This could lead to the demise of NI, and maybe RT, too - I doubt they'd be able to defend themselves for too long in such a situation, meanwhile ...

So I'd love to see a slow, controlled launch, similar to the one Arkadia has shown. This would take quite some time to become fully operational, but it might be worth it.

Have a good time!

PS: For sure I'll be on Cyrene for a while once it opens. I need to have a look at all of this! ;-)

PPS: Howdy all, what a pain, one more forum I have to read ...

Hi,

Thx for the nice welcome! You knew I'd come sooner or later, right? Me much too curious to miss this ;-)

[...] no matter how long they are.
Well, it's crazy - as soon as I have found something I'd like to comment, got settled comfortably behind my freshly repaired keyboard, have made an outline in my mind about the things to write, a gigazillion of thoughts starts flooding my little poor old brain. Most important, all of these, for sure!
:bduh:

You cannot imagine how much text I have deleted already, how much posts made during quite some time have never been sent. But I don't mind. Would I have spent this time whacking huge phat monsters instead, I'd have lost quite some more money during this time - so it actually saves me from more losses!

Anyway, I'm quite impressed how well the Cyrene team is doing. Congratz! Very good to see that after Arkadia now another competent Planet Partner enters the scene. I'll stay Arkadian *1), but all of my best wishes to the Cyrene Team, may you do as well as the A-Team did!

I think 2 strong (not-MA) PP's in the EU is good for my investment. As long as not one of the weaker PP's ends up wasted.

Cheer, and have a good time!
:beerchug:

*1): For sure, I'll visit Cyrene as soon as it's launched. Guess you'll need any hand available during the first days. And there might be a "window of opportunity" to finally get my first discovery ...

You're welcome, and yes, I had a feeling you would make it here eventually, so I'm glad you're here! :)

I'm also looking forward to seeing you on Cyrene after launch for a visit.
